Staff Spotlight ~ Monica Dekat

This month, we are proud to feature Monica Dekat, an Education Specialist at Fortuna Middle School who brings energy, heart, and dedication to everything she does. Monica has a fantastic rapport with both students and staff, and she goes above and beyond every single day to ensure her students are supported and set up for success.
Monica was born and raised right here in Fortuna and is a proud alumna of Ambrosini Elementary, Toddy Thomas, and Fortuna High School. Her love for music started early—she joined the band in 5th grade under the direction of Judi Scharnberg, eventually becoming drum major and first-chair flute player in high school. She continued her musical journey in college, majoring in music and receiving a Bach Stradivarius 37 trumpet as a graduation gift. To this day, Monica plays in several local bands and even helps out with the FMS Jazz Band alongside Mr. McClimon. You can catch her performing with Samba Floresta (Samba of the Forest) this summer at Oyster Fest!
Her career in education began nine years ago as an aide at Glen Paul School. She later completed her resident teaching year with Angela Schuetzle, supporting 1st–4th-grade students with various learning needs. Monica then joined FESD, stepping into a specialized SDC teaching position at her alma mater, Toddy Thomas. Following the district’s reconfiguration, she moved to Fortuna Middle School, where she currently teaches 7th and 8th-grade students with mild, moderate, and extensive support needs.
What Monica loves most about her role is preparing 8th-grade students to take their next big step—high school! She finds great joy in guiding and encouraging them as they gain confidence and independence.
Here's a fun fact about Monica: She learned to ski at age 33! Her motto? You're never too old to learn a new—and extremely challenging—skill.
Monica Dekat is a shining example of what it means to be a passionate educator, and we are lucky to have her on our team at FMS. Thank you, Monica, for all you do for your students and our school community!
