Staff Spotlight ~ David Coons

We are pleased to shine the spotlight on David Coons, the 5th and 6th grade Math Intervention teacher at Toddy Thomas Middle School. David joined the district in 2023 and has quickly become a trusted, approachable, and supportive presence on campus.
Principal Kent Chapman says, “David always develops a great rapport with not only his students, but all students. He is always concerned about students’ well-being.” His calm, steady demeanor and student-first approach make him a valued part of the Toddy community.
David grew up in the Bay Area and moved to Humboldt to attend college. This school year marks his 15th year teaching 5th and 6th grade, and his first year serving as an intervention teacher. He has embraced the role wholeheartedly.
What he enjoys most is working with smaller groups of students.
He explains, “I am able to give them individual attention and see the results so quickly.” Watching students gain confidence and experience those breakthrough moments is his favorite part of the job.
A fun fact about David: he spent one year teaching 5th grade in Maui, an experience he still treasures. He visits his former school any time he travels back to the island.
David’s kindness, strong relationships with students, and dedication to supporting learners wherever they are make him an important part of the Toddy Thomas team. We’re grateful to have him in our district!
