Staff Spotlight ~ Chico Cortes

We are proud to highlight Chico Cortes, the 8th-grade Physical Education teacher at Fortuna Middle School and the district's Athletic Director. Chico has worked in education for the past four years, all of which have been spent here in our district, and he has quickly become a trusted and respected member of the FMS community.
Principal Saul Lewis shares, “Chico has an excellent relationship with his students. He is always ready to assist both students and staff members when needed.” His supportive nature, steady presence, and willingness to jump in wherever needed help make FMS a welcoming place for everyone.
Chico teaches 8th-grade PE and loves seeing students push themselves and discover what they’re capable of. He says, “I love seeing students challenge themselves, meet goals they didn’t think they could achieve, and recognize their own growth both physically and mentally.” His encouragement helps students build resilience and confidence both in the gym and beyond.
A fun fact about Chico is that he played collegiate soccer at Humboldt State — and he once walked the same halls he now teaches in, as an alumnus of Fortuna Middle School.
Chico’s positivity, dedication, and strong connections with students make him a standout part of the FMS team. We are grateful to have him in our district!
