Staff Spotlight ~ Shannon Heavilin

We are proud to feature Shannon Heavilin, a Special Education Teacher at Toddy Thomas Middle School. Shannon grew up in Arcata and attended Humboldt State University. He has been an educator for over 25 years, spending much of that time in private schools before joining our district six years ago. Throughout his career, he has held many roles, including Title I instructor, PE Teacher, After-School Director, and Math Teacher. Remarkably, he has taught in every school he once attended as a student.
His Principal, Kent Chapman, appreciates Shannon’s willingness to help the entire campus community, stating, "He is always willing to help out, even though it might not be his students or his class. He always develops a good rapport with his students and does a great job during CAASPP, taking small groups and individuals to make sure everyone is accommodated."
In addition to his work in the classroom, Shannon serves on school committees and helps to organize the after-school clubs at Toddy Thomas. He earned his Education Specialist Credential during the pandemic and enjoys working with the FESD staff to help students reach goals they may not yet realize are within their reach.
A fun fact about Shannon is the variety of positions he has held over his 25 years in education, ranging from substitute teacher to after-school director. We are glad to have his experience and "team-first" attitude at Toddy Thomas. Thank you, Shannon, for everything you do for our students and our school!
